Irene Koroluk has a Master of Environmental Studies degree, and is a 2017 Bachelor of Fine Arts University of Tasmania graduate.
Whilst training in print-making, Irene attended a quilt fair in 2013, which steered her in the direction of art quilts and free-motion machine stitching after one particular art-quilt, Robyn Eve’s Blown Away, captured her imagination. Her foray into textiles was then sealed after attending exhibitions at the Istanbul Modern in 2014. She found it refreshing and unusual to encounter a National Gallery which valued the feminine, and where many of the works, including some exhibited by men, incorporated traditional female craft processes.
Using her industrial sewing machine as her drawing tool and mixed media, including painting, drawing, printing and photography, Irene explores the possibilities of free motion machine drawing using the art-quilt. Her process is typically improvisational, with no preliminary drawings, and often evolves unexpectedly as she creates. Irene’s current body of work aims to capture the beauty, diversity and variation of Australian flora, fauna, other organisms and landscape. Her pieces depict what she has encountered during her travels and explorations, aspects of the natural world that touch and replenish her soul.
Seabed is inspired by the diverse and colourful soft corals found in Australia’s coastal waters.
