Andi Herman is a multidisciplinary artist whose creative journey began in childhood. Initially working with textile arts from the age of eight, she went on to establish an international reputation over more than three decades as an innovative and highly regarded quilt artist.
In 2014, Andi co-founded youpatch.com, a pioneering digital platform that transforms images into pixelated quilt patterns, merging traditional craft with contemporary technology. In 2024, Andi expanded her practice into painting and drawing, bringing her signature bold use of colour and strong sense of design into new visual languages. Her evolving body of work now also includes garment construction, woodworking, and upholstery—reflecting a deep curiosity and a hands-on approach to making across diverse materials and forms.

Statement: This quilt is based on a photograph taken at our home in Castlemaine: a purchase made possible by funds I inherited following my mother’s passing. I am filled with both gratitude for what she made possible, and sorrow for her absence. Without a doubt, I’d rather have her back.

Before the Cancer

Statement: My mother died in 2023 after a horrendous six-month battle with brain cancer. Creating this quilted portrait of her as a child in healthier times was an important part of my grieving and healing process. She would have adored this piece. Full of colour and life, just like she was.
