Art Quilt Australia 2013: People, Place & Nation

AQA2013catalogueFrom 1 November to 14 December 2013, Art Quilt Australia: people, place and nation was exhibited at Craft ACT Craft and Design Centre.

43 entries were received from new as well as established textile artists. Artists were anonymous and selection was made on the basis of digital images although information on materials, techniques and concept was also provided. The high quality of work submitted representing a wide range of approaches to the definition of a “quilt” made the decision a difficult one and Valerie Kirk, the curator and selector for the exhibition, finally chose 20 works to make a cohesive exhibition on the theme “People, Place and Nation“.

Congratulations to Trish Alcorn, Sue Cunningham, Sue Dennis, Dianne Firth, Pamela Fitzsimons, Jan Frazer, Helen Gray, Jessica Ipkendanz, Marion Matthews, Gloria Muddle, Alison Muir, John Parkes, Marianne Penberthy, Sharron Shalekoff, Brenda Gael Smith, Carolyn Sullivan and Deborah Weir who have had their work selected for Art Quilt Australia 2013: People, Place and Nation.

AUSTRALIA WIDE EIGHT PREVIEW Canopy 21 The Burn (4 AUSTRALIA WIDE EIGHT PREVIEW
Canopy 21 The Burn (40x40cm) by @annabrown1554

Anna Brown’s design inspiration comes from a deep-seated connection to nature and her immediate environment. Her pattern making results from a study of the eucalypt canopies near her home. She works directly with her materials, preferably natural fabrics, cotton, linen and silk, cutting and layering intuitively. Hand quilting introduces texture and depth to her work and is an important link to traditional roots in quilt making.

“Australian eco-systems are threated by climate change. We must act now.”

The Ozquilt Network touring members' exhibition Australia Wide Eight premieres at Warwick Art Gallery from 14 July until 27 August with the official opening on Saturday 16 July. All welcome!

Suzanne Gummow trained as a Visual Arts Educator lecturing in both secondary and tertiary education. She has been a dedicated teacher for over 50 years and has taught at many different high schools in South Australia during her career, she is now retired. She also teaches private workshops in textiles, quilt making and art throughout Australia.

The need to explore my thoughts in textiles is a passionate driving force. Playing with strong colours, painting in rich thread bringing together tactile surfaces in my textiles constantly gives me an amazing sense of excitement each time I create a new piece.

AUSTRALIA WIDE EIGHT PREVIEW Apple Isle Series: Br AUSTRALIA WIDE EIGHT PREVIEW
Apple Isle Series: Bright and frozen with Tino on the radio (40x40cm) by Lynne Hargreaves

Born in the UK, Lynne Hargreaves worked as a graphic designer moving into design training in 1978. 20yrs in vocational and tertiary education followed. Joining the cultural sector and arts management in 1998 she retired to Tasmania in 2017 from the position of Director of Exhibitions & Collections at the Art Gallery of WA. She has worked in partnership with institutions such as the Louvre, Tate, V&A, St Petersburg State Theatre, and most recently the MoMA, NY to present renowned artworks in Perth. Entering a new chapter of her career she now has a focus on her own textile practice.

She is currently working with the broader linear qualities of the landscape. The Apple Isles Series takes inspiration from her home in Tasmania’s Tamar Valley. Simplifying and abstracting elements she explores drawing with stitch and surface texturing. The work displayed features experiments with hand-dyed fabric. The differing hues are layered and pieced together and then overworked with double-needle and free-motion machine stitching. Linear patterning is worked in machine and hand embroidery and is a colour study for a large work.

“An early start, listening to garden guru Tino Carnevale on the car radio I was enchanted by the morning, the brilliance of colour belying the cold of the frozen fields which the sun had yet to touch. The work is a miniature study of ideas and impressions from that morning.”
