Alison’s early years in Far North Queensland surrounded by rainforest and crater lakes, instilled in her a love of plants and nature. After a career in Plant Biology, Alison transitioned into creating textile art. She has always loved ancient techniques such as indigo dyed shibori and cyanotype and found using these techniques in contemporary ways very rewarding.
Alison is particularly drawn to surface design. She finds the idea of beginning with a piece of white or black fabric and influencing each stage of the design appealing. She uses many techniques in her art practice including, indigo and fibre-reactive dyeing, shibori, cyanotype, wax resist, breakdown printing, screen printing, painting, stencilling and hand stitching.
Drawing inspiration from social observations, emotions and the natural world, allows Alison to create pieces that have a ‘story to tell’. She also enjoys exploring work as a series as this allows her to further development of a concept.
Alison is a member of several exhibiting textile groups including: SAQA, Ozquilt Network, Reddy Arts, Textile Art Group (TAG) and Magic Carpet Artists. Her art has been selected for both International and National juried exhibitions.

Statement: Kangaroo grass not only provides an excellent habitat for reptiles, amphibians and small mammals but also an important food source for finches, parrots, kangaroos and wallabies. The long, slender seed heads rustle and sway in the breeze and I wanted to create this sense of gentle movement in the piece.
