One of Julie’s earliest memories is of sitting beside her Mum in the sewing room, ‘sewing’ holes in paper on a toy plastic machine. Born and raised in Zimbabwe, Julie is drawn to explore ways of depicting animals or themes from nature in much of her work. Cutting, sewing straight and getting corners to meet she admits aren’t natural strengths, which is why she loves making art quilts! Raw-edge applique, thread sketching, free-motion quilting and wet felting are her most-loved methods of working.

Scarlet Acrobat

Dimensions: 90 x 90cm (H x W)
Statement: The male Scarlet Honeyeater is the acrobat of the bushland near my home. It’s hard to miss his red plumage that is so vivid against the foliage as he flits from under one canopy and over another, on a mission to gather food for himself, his mate or his young.
