Alysn Midgelow-Marsden of Tawharanui/Matakana, New Zealand is one of the selectors for Australia Wide Seven bringing her experience as a creator, mentor, tutor, writer in and of fine art textiles. Her work crosses boundaries, exploring metal, fibre and stitch to create expressive, dramatic art. Lost at Sea is part of a series which combines personal memories and a long connection to the seashore and the ocean combined with an equally long connection to fibres, textiles and stitch. Alysn’s motivation is a combination of her long experience with textiles, referencing the traditions of seamstresses, tailors and embroiderers through the ages and with the marine environment. Siren songs of soaring calls, spectral moans, shrill wails and rhythmic scratches reach across the oceans; objects, both natural and otherwise, wash up on the shore; visual elements flow freely, overlapping, echoing and retreating. Connected for almost as long to the sea as to stitching, her work integrates these. Her experience of the marine environment, including a Marine Biology degree, has strengthened through daily contact with the sea and shore. In a chance connection she also finds herself living in a house designed and built by New Zealand’s foremost marine biologist and conservationist. Follow Alysn’s work at:
