Art Quilt International Abstract and Geometric is the latest offering from Martha Sielman, author of Masters: Art Quilts volumes 1 and 2 (Lark Books 2008 and 2011) and the Executive Director of SAQA Inc. Abstract and Geometric represents a range of styles across the genre of abstract art selected from more than 1300 submissions from 461 artists. Abstract and Geometric is illustrated by 300 quilts of 124 major quilt artists from 18 countries including works by two Australian artists and OZQN members – Judy Hooworth and Ali George.
Judy Hooworth is one of 29 international feature artists. She is interviewed at length about her sources of inspiration, use of photography and design development before a discussion of two of her series – Black Water and Silk Road. Ali George’s work is featured as one of the 97 gallery artists included in the publication.
The imagery was selected by Martha based on many factors. Ultimately Martha says she kept coming back to certain images, time and again and represented a variety of approaches to the subject matter – from “non representational explorations of colour and form, to abstracted realistic imagery, to the ultimate in abstraction – words: symbols that stand for concepts and emotions.”
