A compulsion to draw, design and stitch has been a constant theme throughout Vanessa’ Newton-Brown’s life. She has designed and made original pieces since early years and is never without several projects on the go.
For Vanessa, who hand stitches and embroiders, colour is one of the primary inspirations. Her palette of stranded cottons, silks and threads has a lustre unique to fibre.
Recently semi-retired, Vanessa is excited to have the time to further hone her skills. She finds the natural world, micro and macro, provides endless inspiration. The contrasting and vibrant combinations of colours and shapes, are reflected in the varied palettes she uses.
Scarab beetles are the ancient Egyptian symbols for the cycle of life, regeneration and hope. The natural world of beetles with their striking patterns and colour combinations provides endless inspiration for my work. I am not attempting to represent anatomically accurate beetles but rather my interpretation of these creatures.
