Not all Ozquilt Network members live in Australia. Born in PNG to NZ parents, Lois Parish Evans lived in Australia for 40+ years before moving to the Bay of Plenty, New Zealand in 2016. Lois’s earliest creative memories are of learning to sew as a young child. In adolescence she discovered art and merged her two favourite subjects into a Fibre/Textiles major in a Visual Arts degree at the University of Newcastle (Australia). She has continued to be passionate about creativity and textile art since.
After years of exploring many textile and art techniques Lois now uses stitch as a mark making tool, and the quilt as a canvas to explore and express the way she views the world. She draws on the many techniques she has learnt often using one or more techniques together. These techniques include hand colouring, hand painting, printmaking, free motion stitching, hand stitching, free motion quilting and raw edge applique.
The process of creating usually begins with a camera; recording a landscape or detail in nature that inspires her, before heading to her studio to translate the inspiration into a drawing and ultimately into a textile artwork. She finds herself drawn to expressing the sculptural qualities and the form and structure of a subject through line, pattern, shape and colour. Most recently she has been exploring the deconstruction, reconstruction and abstraction of the subject.
Lois enjoys the challenge of exhibitions and competitions for her own development as an artist and has had three solo exhibitions at Timeless Textiles in Australia. She has participated in many group exhibitions and won a number of awards for her thread paintings and art quilts both nationally and internationally. Her artwork is in both national and international private and public collections. Her contribution to Australia Wide Eight is Gentle Upon The Eucalypt (40x40cm):
As the breeze gently breathes across
the thickness of foliage
a glimpse of sky pushes through.
Sunlight plays across the surfaces
creating light and shadow
penetrating and highlighting the
structure of the individual leaves.
Changing the view
sometimes dense in colour
sometimes translucent
always changing
always delighting the senses.
