Art Quilt Australia 2023, including Expressions: The Wool Quilt Prize, opens this week! This striking collection of contemporary quilt textiles will be on exhibition at the National Wool Museum, Geelong, Victoria, from 12 August until 12 November. Opening hours 10am to 5pm daily.
Today we preview two works by Jessica Wheelahan of East Lindfield, NSW. Kodachrome quilt was inspired by vivid childhood memories of family slide nights. Each square was painstakingly constructed from tiny pieces of scrap fabric during the lockdowns while the artist was separated from family, and are representative of the slides in the projector.
Another Dimension is a whimsical wool quilt inspired by the lurid colours of found vintage wool, pop art and spaceship control panels. Scientific words whirl about among semi precious human artefacts- shisha embroidery of coins, pearl buttons, silk ribbon and three dimensional puffs.
