Teaching Background and Experience

Trained as a secondary school art and craft teacher, I have been teaching quiltmaking since 1983. My aim is to introduce my students to ways of thinking and working which will be conducive to them creating original work.  As I love to build my work in layered processes starting with white cloth and want stitch, thread and texture to be an important and integral part of my pieces I mostly teach surface design processes and sewing machine techniques.

Workshops

1. Picture Perfect Piecing — 2 days In this class you will learn to how to develop a drawing from which to piece a small quilt top. Necessary markings and labeling will be added to the full size design, tracings made and you will learn  techniques involved in piecing different shapes together. Fabulous technique for students with some experience.

2. Paint, Print & Pizazz —  3 days

Day One - Create painted fabrics

Day Two - Design, cut and print an original linocut block

Day Three - Using free rotary cutting techniques, free motion quilting and embroidery produce a small, original piece of work.

Great fun class to stretch even the experienced. Knowledge of free motion sewing desirable.

3. Drawing with Thread —  2 days You will be assisted to create a drawing which will be the focus of  your small quilt. The idea is to translate a line drawing into thread on fabric using the sewing machine. Exploration of stitches to create shading and textural effects will be carried out. Prior knowledge of free motion stitching required.

4. Fabric Painting — 1 day Create unique and individual fabrics which will look great in your work. No artistic skill needed as the effects we are after are more textural than pictorial. Fabric paint is applied using sponges, rollers, paint brushes, bubble wrap and household bits and pieces. Great fun!

5. Innovative Machine Quilting Techniques —   1 day Get to know your sewing machine a whole lot better! Try : two threads through the one needle; twin needles used free motion and with programmed stitches; a variety of threads; thicker threads used in the bobbin; programmed stitches used free motion; couching.

6. Surface Design Classes — 1 day each

a. Linocut block printing — You will be assisted to design and cut your own original design in lino which you can then print on paper and/or fabric. A variety of other blocks will be on hand for you to print from as well.

b. Silk Screen Printing — Very simple but very effective silk screen methods are covered. These techniques could easily be carried out at home. You will create prints on fabric which can be incorporated into your textile work.

7. Transfer Dye Printing — Transfer dyes are first painted or printed onto paper and when dry are heat transferred using an iron to fabric with some synthetic content. You will experiment with a number of the ways in which this versatile medium can be used.

8. Surface Design Smorgasbord — 3 to 5 days A class packed full of techniques for producing highly individual fabrics to use in textile work. Topics can include: frottage; making stamps and blocks to print from (the easy way); monoprinting; silk screen printing; transfer dyes; *dyeing (?), fabric painting; rusting fabric; discharge dyeing; painted fusible webbing; the use of sheer fabrics and more!

9. Procion Dyeing — 1 day You will learn the art of gradation dyeing using plastic bags and then move on to dyeing fabric in layers and using multiple colours on the one piece of fabric to achieve interesting effects. Some basic shibori techniques are covered and you will dye 10  12 metres of fabric in this class.

10. Fabric Collage — 1 - 2 days You will produce ' new'  fabrics made from scraps from other projects (or even specially generated scraps!). You will enhance the surface of this new fabric with generous amounts of free motion machine stitching. The surface can further be developed with  the addition of raw edge appliqué or machine stitchery.

11. Expanding Horizons — 5 days An advanced class for those looking for stimulation! Paint, dye and print fabric the first couple of days. The emphasis is on techniques not included in other classes. You will be assisted to develop an individual work and further techniques are introduced to suit the project. Some design exercises included. Total indulgence!

12. Machine Embroidery Magic — 1 or 2 days A number of machine embroidery techniques are covered in this class including: free machined motifs on soluble fabric; thread painting; altering tensions to change stitch character; using automatic stitches to create textural interest and more. One day allows for sampling of techniques, two days is better! Prior knowledge of free motion stitching preferred.
