A trained secondary teacher, I travel extensively both in Australia and overseas, teaching classes and lecturing. I like to challenge students to design their own quilts giving support and encouragement throughout each stage of the process but also providing patterns for those less confident.
1. Paint a Landscape with Fabric (4 or 5 days)
Design your own landscape quilt, learning the key elements of design and experimenting with colour. Move on to dye and paint your own unique fabrics and then using a simple overlay technique, construct your quilt. Embellish with machine embroidery and quilting for extra texture and dimension. Your bonus is the unused hand painted pieces you can take home to add to your stash.
2. Stitching Watercolours (1 or 2 days)
Using pieces of fabric instead of watercolours, create a textile painting combining a subtle background with machine appliqueed flowers or abstract shapes. Basic design principles and colour choices will be discussed and a number of different colour wash techniques demonstrated. Instruction will be given for satin stitch, soft edge and 3-D applique ©. (Kits and patterns available)
3. Sunrise, Sunset (2 days)
Using photos of spectacular skies for inspiration, paint fabric for sky and water areas. Add a silhouette of trees and other shapes to create a stunning original wall hanging. This class includes instruction in machine embroidery techniques.
4. The Contoured Landscape (1 or 2 days)
Learn a simple overlay technique that allows you to construct an original landscape design with easy curved piecing. Some embroidery and free motion stitching techniques to create extra dimension and texture is a feature of this class. There is an option of hand painting fabric for the sky and background in the 2-day class. (Kits and patterns available).
5. Landscape Mosaic (2 or 3 days)
Using small pieces of fabric, build up a landscape design that is both original and exciting. Learn about design principles, including perspective and focal point. This workshop is suitable for new and experienced quilters with an option of hand painting fabric for special areas.
6. Procion Dyeing and Fabric Painting Workshop (1 day)
Have fun with colourful and easy to use cold-water dyes. Dye about 15 metres of fabric including runs of colour families, analogous and complementary colour schemes, shades from light to dark, over dyeing and unique hand painted pieces. (Fee for dyes and other chemicals)
7. Procion Dyeing - The Next Step (1 day)
Following on from the previous workshop, this class explores shallow bath dyeing, folds, resists and much more. Create stunning, one of a kind, larger pieces of fabric. Experiment with painting and spraying techniques to produce distinctive designs. Approximately 15 metres of fabric will be dyed in this class. (Fee for dyes and other chemicals).
8. Machine Applique © Magic (1 day)
Learn how to drive your machine to do a range of techniques including satin stitch applique ©, invisible machine applique ©, soft edge and 3-D applique ©. Using these techniques, create a small wall hanging based on a bright and zany vase of flowers. Approximate size 50 x 65cms
9. Bargello on the Run
Create amazing curves from straight lines, learning a 'foolproof' method for accurate piecing. There is a choice of two designs using 10-12 fabrics.
10. Drawing Nature with Thread
Capture the beauty of nature using free motion stitching. Learn how to get the best stitch on your machine and then have fun practicing interesting textures and outlines. And this is all before lunch! In the afternoon, create a small wall hanging featuring a simple background and luscious machine embroidery.
11. Colour is Magic (2 days)
A stress-free class where students have fun experimenting with colour and design. Beginning with structured colour schemes, students will confidently move on to create a simple landscape quilt that features an unusual palette of fabrics. The emphasis will be on colour choice and value, using colours that may never have been seen before in nature but work harmoniously together for a stunning effect. (Students would be expected to purchase a colour wheel - approximately $10.00
12. Flying Free (1 or 2 days)
Have you been collecting Japanese, African, Aboriginal or another special group of fabrics? Have fun designing and stitching a quilt that features these fabrics in a unique way. Irregular blocks featuring machine applique © and fill in blocks are joined b vertical or horizontal panels to create a spectacular 'one of a kind'.
Note - in all classes, students will receive a comprehensive set of notes with step-by-step instructions, various techniques and other useful tips.
