1. Spectacular Scraps (2 day class, all levels)
Create dazzling scrap quilts from your fabric stash, using Four-Patch blocks made of simple half square triangles. Sort your stash fabrics into two colour families, make the blocks, then repeat, reverse and rotate the blocks for countless design possibilities! Throw out the old notion of —light and dark — fabrics in scrap quilts, and experience this innovative approach to working with colour and pattern. You will enjoy the creative play as your original design takes shape, and you will have the added bonus of seeing many of the other possible combinations from fellow student's work!
2. Going Crazy! (2 day class, all levels)
Add a little Razzle Dazzle to your quilts with this new approach to crazy patchwork. Combine lots of different fabrics with quick cutting and piecing techniques and create an exciting quilt! There are numerous size and setting variations, and colour / fabric combinations you can choose from to make an ‘up to the minute' version of an old favourite design. (Embroidery, embellishment and traditional applications of crazy patchwork will not be covered in this class).
3. Square Dance (This class may be extended 2-5 days, intermediate and up)
Create sensational scrap quilts from rotary cut strips n' squares n' triangles! Working directly from your fabric stash you will learn how to combine many different colours and prints to achieve that RAZZLE DAZZLE effect! Discover how to use colour with confidence, regardless whether your fabric stash is “way out” or more traditional! We will explore the concept of working with traditional four patch and nine patch blocks; looking at ways the blocks can be split, rotated, and set, and the countless ways you can create stunning and original quilts from simple beginnings.
You can choose from three different class options.
OPTION 1: Focus on four patch blocks. Create a wall hanging/lap/cot size quilt (or larger if you wish). There are three different projects to inspire you; or I can show you how easy it is to design your own.
OPTION 2: Focus on nine patch blocks. Explore the design possibilities from simple blocks to more complex blocks. There are two easy projects for inspiration, either lap size or bed size; or I can show you how easy it is to design your own.
OPTION 3: Design based class in which the concept of working with traditional four patch and nine patch blocks, and split/rotated sets is explored. You will produce samples of different blocks and develop lots of ideas for starting your new quilt. You can choose to begin your new quilt at any time during class if you wish to follow through on any of the designs being offered.
4. Razzle Dazzle Log Cabin (2 day class. Also offered as a 1 day class where students make a small wall hanging with 2 design options. The 2 day class offers more options with design, sets, etc.)
Stitch a lively scrap Log Cabin Quilt. Explore the many different ways you can use colour and prints in log cabin blocks. Discover easy ways to add innovative variations to log cabin blocks and sets, and learn how to use fabrics with PIZAZZ!
5. Colourways —An Introduction to Colour (1 or 2 day class, all levels)
Colour theory made simple in easy to follow exercises for all quilters. With the colour wheel as the starting point, discover ways you can choose colour schemes for your quilts. Learn about value, harmony and contrast. This is a 'hands on' class, you will use your own fabrics on work sheets provided by the tutor. No sewing. There is a small fee for the materials.
The following classes are for those students who are interested in developing original ideas and designs relating to contemporary quiltmaking. There is no degree of artistic skill required, just an open mind and a willingness to experiment! A basic knowledge of quiltmaking techniques is required, and a familiarity with your sewing machine is essential. These classes are not suitable for beginners.
6. Collage and Colour (May be extended 2-5 days)
The focus of this class is exploring creativity through experimentation. All works are small, enabling you to develop ideas quickly and freely. Beginning with the elements and principles of design and basic colour theory, you will explore composition through a series of rapid 'hands on' exercises in fabric. Then, you will move on to the creation of small, spontaneous collages worked directly in cloth in a free and improvisational way. Selected pieces will be developed into finished works, enhanced with machine stitching and some hand stitching if desired.
7. Environmental Expressions (Is offered as 1, 2 — 5 day class)
Inspiration for design and colour can be found anywhere, even in the classroom! This class focuses on creating original work inspired by, and developed from the immediate physical environment, using simple methods and materials. Various techniques from piecing to collage will be explored in translating designs into fabric compositions.
8. Explorations — Developing personal imagery in art quilts (Is offered as a 5 day class for Advanced students)
Meaningful quilts express ideas and emotions of the artist. The focus in this class is to explore means of self expression through the use of mixed media. You will bring to class source material that references your personal life, experiences and interests, with a varied selection of materials from your home/studio environment. Exercises in design focus, composition, colour and texture will lead to the development of a series of
small experimental quilts.
9. Creating Colourful Quilts (5 day class, intermediate and up)
Colour, colour, colour and more colour! Need some inspiration? Join me for five days of playing with colour, and create bright and beautiful quilt tops. You will embark on some simple colour exercises for starters, exploring basic colour theory, and looking at ways you can use the colour wheel as a starting point for discovering exciting colour combinations. I will give you lots of ideas for creating stunning quilts that are easy to piece, and you will be encouraged to sew like crazy to make as many tops as you can.
