Artist's Statement

My background is in contemporary visual art and design, over time moving across various mediums glass, paint, basketry, papier maché, and finally returning to the craft of stitch.

First learnt as a child at my mothers knee, these many years later, it has become my passion.

My images draw on the past and the present, across cultures, personal visual and spiritual experiences and thoughts.

The very intense sense of place one experiences when standing in solitude and silence in the vast expanse of the Australian outback, the landscape engulfing you …

I use predominantly natural fibres (silk and cotton) as my base fabrics, hand dyeing and painting the blank cloth to create a background on which to work.

The cloth is then enriched with extensive hand stitching, traditional and expressive, (often using hand dyed threads) to create an image with texture, movement, subtle changes in colour and discreet areas of detail for the eye to pause and investigate.
