A teacher for 20 years, my methods have become freer and more responsive to the Australian context. Workshops are process driven, the student experiments with techniques, visual texture and colour, developing original designs inspired by Australian landscapes and art.
Australian Bush Quilts Using the standard size of tailors' or dressmakers' samples, women designed innumerable quilts without templates. Medallion style, all over and strippy layouts are possible. Explore the different styles with a one patch, then make up your own version. (see Australian Patchwork and Quilting Magazine 1997, American Patchwork and Quilting, August 1996, Craft and Home, October '94 for examples).
True Blue Quilts Aboriginal art and the landscape provide inspiration for theme, colour and texture, shape and line. Develop curved strip piecing into units and borders. Think outside the square in a loose geometry! After a number of exercises to explore technique and fabric combinations, create your own original Australian quilt. See image of True Blue Poles for an example.
Corestone Quilts A new interpretation of the traditional log cabin technique, Corestone quilts were inspired by the concentric weathering of corestones of granite and aboriginal art. This is a freeing up workshop, designed to give mastery of a technique that liberates from rulers and templates. Think outside the square! It gives the opportunity to explore combinations of visual textures.
Shattering By exploiting the possibilities of the printed fabric design, explore the effects of shattering. Keep the background colour constant and displace fabric designs and float them to create a range of moods, from subtle to dramatic. Use the simplest of techniques, straight lines and seminole. See Handmade (Australia) 3, 1994 for an example.
Star Crazy A quick technique of stacking and cutting through for creating a quilt of crazy patch star blocks. See Australian Patchwork and Quilting Magazine Vol 5 No 5 for an example.
Overall Designs Freeform Forget the rigidity of the grid and design a repeat block quilt that reads as a crazy patch but sews together easily.
