Judy Hooworth

I live and work in Morisset, NSW. I studied at the National Art School 1963-66 and began making patchwork quilts and stitched textiles soon after. I have exhibited widely in Australia and abroad and my work has been published in many books and magazines throughout the world. I have taught quiltmaking since 1981 throughout Australia and have given classes and lectures in NZ, UK, Germany and USA. I have maintained a studio art quilt practice for more than twenty five years, and am also known for my colourful contemporary quilts that reference traditional patchwork patterns. I have written three books on contemporary quiltmaking, Spectacular Scraps and Quilts on the Double (with Margaret Rolfe), and Razzle Dazzle Quilts, all published by Martingale and Company. My quilts are held in public and private collections in Australia, UK and USA including the Powerhouse Museum Sydney, Tamworth Art Gallery, Stanthorpe Regional Art Gallery and the Museum of Arts and Design in New York. I was awarded the Quilters’ Guild NSW Inc. Study Scholarship 1994 and a Professional Development Grant from the Visual Arts/Crafts Fund, the Australia Council 1995.

Artist statement

Dora Creek flows close to my home; and I can walk out my front door and in less than a minute   be at the river bank, surrounded by the bush and the myriad bird life that can be found there.
I am captivated and mesmerised by its beauty. Constant, yet inconsistent, revealing and sometimes concealing, its’ moody and often dramatic variations from day to day in many ways mirror my emotions. I’m fascinated with the movement of light on water, the patterns created by time and tidal flow, and wind and rain.  Changes in the weather day by day, fluctuations in the light, and the changing seasons imbue the landscape with endless colour combinations and inspire my work.

I create my own fabrics by painting, mono printing and discharge dyeing the cloth which is then collaged, pieced and quilted by machine.
