Artist Statement

My working days were spent in administration with a responsible position which involved precise, detailed, structured work. So I guess in the early days (1980s) it was a natural progression to be intrigued by the precision expected and required in traditional patchwork and quilting that first got me onto the textile path.

Having pursued oil painting as a pastime for many years I particularly enjoy the use of colour and design involved in textile work. As my enjoyment and interest increased, Ive attended many workshops and exhibited in various shows. Ive also completed commission work during this time.

After retiring I became a qualified quilt valuer with Victorian Quilters for six years. It was not long before I left the traditional scene and ventured into the art quilt world where I can enjoy the freedom of experimenting and approaching things my way. At present Im at the wonderful stage where I work with two other likeminded textile artists which I find very inspiring. Experimenting with altering the surface of the fabric with colour as in dyeing, stamping, painting or discharging or with the use of stitching with various threads either by hand or machine is an ongoing joy.

The collection of information for challenges and themes is becoming a big part of the enjoyment that I get working with textiles. Can’t imagine not having an idea or goal in the creative pipeline that is not waiting to be pursued.
