ENTERING EXHIBITIONS

What determines whether you enter an exhibition? This is an interesting question and I have been pondering it for a while. Here is what I currently do, taking a New Zealand perspective.
I try to enter prestigious art shows. In New Zealand these are things like the Norsewear Awards and the Cleveland Art Awards. Then I enter juried art quilt shows being held in this country in good venues. I also enter local exhibitions run by the quilt group I belong to. The problem comes over which of the overseas shows to enter, taking into account the costs of entering, possible customs problems and the fact that you often have to put 'Not For Sale' on entries shown overseas.
I have gradually come around to the idea that it's best to enter shows that have a catalogue or a really nice book! Such as Quilt National and Visions. Lately I have also entered the World Quilt and Craft Competition. Bernina pays the costs of taking the show to the States so the cost to enter is very low and they sort out customs duties etc. So its local art shows and good art quilt shows, overseas shows with catalogues, overseas shows where it doesn't cost an arm and a leg to enter. Picky aren't I !
