PRINTED FABRICS AND MORE

Ozquilt Network Newsletter Issue #35 MARCH 2000

Tony Dyer warns of problems with printed fabrics. Of care being needed in use of the cloth of "another's culture". This cloth is often just cloth, made to be sold to create wealth for the designer. So be wary that the designer is not a rip off merchant but be content to use the 'real' cloth as a pleasing raw ingredient. For example, Tiwi, Jilimara and Bima (aboriginal tribes) print fabric for sale and use. They have done their homework and are not offering goods culturally offensive to their peers. Most fabrics are not the original work of the quiltmaker and, for example, most hand dyes look just like most other hand dyes. Pleasing quilts don't need all this caution. Just horses for courses.

Also, as a woman, I find if offensive that a man was invited to select AQIPP 1999, 'For Women by Women'. Ridiculous, too.
