Ozquilt Network Newsletter Issue #36 JUNE 2000

On Saturday 12 June, local people and quilters from distant parts converged on the local hall at Gellibrand, Victoria, a two and a half hour drive south west of Melbourne. They went to attend the one day preview of 'Australian Bounty - Art Quilts Australiennes, Natura 2000', the wonderful collection of thirty quilts that will travel to France with Dijanne Cevaal on 23 June 2000. The Australian Quilters Association chartered two buses to take quilters from Melbourne. People also arrived by car and bus from Melbourne, and from more distant places like the far north of Victoria, Gippsland, Canberra and South Australia. Some of those who travelled long distances camped overnight. It is estimated that between 450 and 500 people attended.

I travelled in one of the buses. It was a pleasant drive through the green and misty winter countryside, broken by stops at quilt shops and a restaurant with an embroidery exhibition. When we arrived at Gellibrand, the car park was full and the hall was packed with so many enthusiastic visitors that it was difficult to move! The quilts looked stunning, glowing in every imaginable colour and style against black screens. This is a fine exhibition that will proudly represent the quilters of Australia. Another feature of the exhibition was a large group quilt created from blocks made by most of the exhibitors. It was put together by Dijanne as a gift to Mme Tison who will host the exhibition at the Chateau de Chassy en Morvan in Burgundy, France.

The quilts looked equally impressive on a white background in the full colour catalogue, where the simple, clear layout complemented Tony Summers' excellent photography. An appropriate record of a vibrant exhibition.
